On the very first evening she finds a rolled-up film reel on her pillow, tied with a faded red ribbon. The label carries two words and handwriting she will later learn to recognise.

The ferry pulled away and Elena watched the only link to the mainland shrink to a white dot on the water. The air smelled of salt, of overripe mango and of a third thing — sweetish, something she could not yet name.
“First day?” asked the man on the pier without turning around. He was holding an old film camera, one of the kind with real reels, and aiming it at the horizon. Or at her. From that angle it was impossible to tell.
“Does it show?”
“It shows on everyone.” He finally looked at her and smiled with half his mouth. “The island loves newcomers. Mark my words: in a month you won’t want to leave.”
Elena laughed politely and dragged her suitcase along the boards. Only on the third step did she realise what had stung her in that sentence. He had not said “you won’t want to” as a compliment.
He had said it as a diagnosis.
That same evening, in the bungalow overlooking the lagoon, she found the first reel. It had been left on her pillow, wound tight, tied with a faded red ribbon. On the label, in handwriting she would later learn to recognise, there were only two words…
